â
Christmas dinner for half the neighborhood,â Sam had said.
They crowded the Clerysâ modest apartment, a couple with two toddlers, an elderly nun, a man with dreadlocks who worked at the shop. I counted three aunts, four uncles including Gerry-the-cabbie, two handfuls of cousins (Or the children of cousins? Below a certain age, I couldnât tell the generations apart), and a baby. There was lots of chatting and drinking and passing plates of food. The TV crackled with pop carols and a streaming yule log, adding to the noise. The smellsâturkey and Brussel sprouts, beer and bodiesâpervaded the close, warm space.
Anything less like Christmas in Kansas was hard to imagine.
Toni was laughing, throwing herself into a competitive card game with Samâs brother and sisters. I wasnât sure of the rules, but exploding kittens were involved. Under the table, the orange cat groomed itself, apparently unconcerned.
Gerry, the cab driver, knocked a cigarette from the pack in his pocket.
âNo smoking in the house,â Janette said. âYou know the rules.â
âYour husband smoked.â
âRight. And now heâs dead.â
My gaze flew to Sam. His crooked mouth lifted on one side.
âRest his soul,â Gerry said. He raised his glass. âTo Martin.â
The chorus ran around the table. âTo Martin.â âMy brother.â âAr dheis Dé go raibh a anam.â
They all drank. The baby knocked over a water glass, prompting a flurry of napkins and exclamations.
âSorry, Aunt Jan,â the young mother said, blotting the tablecloth.
âNo problem, darling.â
Grace peeled off an orange section for the baby, who promptly flung it to the cat under the table.
âAnd when is one of you lot going to give my sister a grandchild?â an older woman asked, with a look around at the Clerys.
âIâm going to uni, Aunt Nora,â Grace said.
Fiadh crossed her arms. âDonât look at me. Iâm not wanting crotch fruit yet.â
âSam?â
âSorry, love.â He winked. âI always use protection.â
âGerry, you light up that fag in this house, and Iâll put it out on your forehead,â Janette said.
The doorbell rang.
âCome in! Itâs open!â
âOne of you get that,â Janette said.
With a put-upon sigh, Jack left the card game and slouched into the hall. âItâs for Grace,â he said, returning a moment later.
âWell, donât leave whoever it is standing there. Invite them in.â
A figure materialized behind him. A lanky, red-haired boy. My mouth soured as I recognized him.
âWell, look at that,â Fiadh drawled. âItâs Danny Doyle.â
I reached for my wineglass, rinsing the flat taste from my mouth.
âWhat the fuck are you doing here?â Sam asked.
Janetteâs eyes narrowed. âLanguage.â
Dannyâs Adamâs apple bobbed as he swallowed. I almost felt sorry for him. Almost. âHappy Christmas, Mrs. Clery. From my mother.â He handed her a box of chocolates. âAnd this is for you.â He offered a smaller box to Grace.
She took it, turning a pretty pink.
Dannyâs gaze met mine. His blush rivaled Graceâs before he jerked his head in acknowledgment and looked away.
âGet the boy some pudding,â one of the auntsâRuby? Eileen?âsaid.
âWeâre out of forks,â Fiadh said.
Grace took a step toward the kitchen. âIâll wash some up.â
âI can help,â Danny said eagerly.
